Founder Q&A

Q · What inspired you to start this business?

After spending more than 20 years in state and federal government, I joined my family’s agricultural business in Northern Maine. While helping operate County Ag & Turf Supply, I saw an opportunity to create something entirely different—an experience-focused business that would bring people together through creativity and connection. Timber Candle Bar was inspired by my love of fragrance, entrepreneurship, and community. I wanted to create a destination where people could slow down, be creative, and make lasting memories. Named after our Bernese Mountain Dog, Timber, the business reflects the warmth, authenticity, and sense of home that Maine is known for. What began as an idea quickly grew into a thriving candle bar and boutique where guests can create custom candles, blend fragrances, and enjoy unique experiences with family and friends.

Q · Why Maine?

Maine is home. The people, landscapes, and strong sense of community have shaped who I am as both a person and a business owner. Many of our fragrances are inspired by the places we love most—from pine forests and lakes to the rugged coastline and changing seasons. Maine’s entrepreneurial spirit, resilience, and support for small businesses have been instrumental in our growth. Operating in Northern Maine has also allowed us to create something unique. We are proving that destination experiences and innovative retail concepts can thrive in rural communities while helping attract visitors and support the local economy.

Q · What makes your business unique?

Timber Candle Bar is much more than a candle store—it’s an experience. Guests create their own custom candles by selecting vessels and blending fragrances to create something uniquely their own. We combine fragrance, creativity, and hospitality in a way that encourages connection and memory-making. In addition to our candle-making experiences, we hand-pour our own line of premium home fragrance products inspired by Maine. Every scent is thoughtfully developed, and many reflect the natural beauty and lifestyle of our state. As one of the only experiential candle bars in Northern Maine, we’ve created a destination that attracts both local residents and visitors looking for something memorable and distinctly Maine.

Q · What has been your biggest challenge?

Like many small businesses, our biggest challenge has been launching and growing during a period of economic uncertainty. As a new business in a rural market, we had to prove that an experience-based concept could succeed in Northern Maine. Building awareness, educating customers about the candle-making experience, and balancing growth with limited resources required persistence and creativity. At the same time, those challenges have become opportunities. We’ve built a loyal customer base, expanded our product offerings, created local jobs, and established Timber Candle Bar as a destination for both residents and visitors. The experience has reinforced the importance of adaptability, community support, and staying focused on our vision.

Q · What are you working on next?

Candle Bar’s reach while continuing to enhance the customer experience. Our recent website launch allows customers nationwide to shop our products and even create custom candles online. We’re growing our wholesale partnerships, expanding our signature fragrance collections, and developing new experiential offerings, including our Timber Salt Bar. We are also exploring opportunities to bring the Timber Candle Bar experience to additional Maine communities in the future. Our goal is simple: continue creating meaningful experiences, handcrafted products, and lasting memories while showcasing the creativity and entrepreneurial spirit that make Maine special.
